A Little Bit About Me
I was born in Birmingham and just about scraped into that generation they call ‘Baby Boomers’, though I doubt my parents were attempting to boom the post- war generation by having me. It was more the desire of my dad who wished for a daughter after having a son seven years earlier. He got his wish.
They soon moved from their two bed council house, into a three bed on a new estate in south Birmingham where I spent my life until I left aged twenty to be a wife and mother to two children; a daughter and son. After being a stay-at-home mum and finally dying of boredom, I persuaded my parents to look after my 3-year old son for each afternoon and my neighbour to collect my daughter at the end of the school day, allowing me to obtain a part-time job as a secretary. At the same time, both Rob and myself returned to study, he as an electrical/electronics engineer and me as a teacher.
It was hard keeping the part-time study, part-time job and mum balls in the air, but eventually the hard work paid off and we both went on to have successful careers. Never happy with the status quo, I accumulated additional qualifications by taking courses in teaching exercise to music and photography. My career ensured further study as technology became mainstream, leading to the abandonment of teaching nice young ladies business and secretarial skills. I can still touch type at speed (useful) and read and write Pitman shorthand (not so useful). I eventually found myself teaching Information Technology to intermediate and advanced students at my college in the West Midlands, becoming a senior teacher in my later years.
Retirement and a life-long love of reading inspired me to finally put my touch-typing fingers to the keyboard and attempt to write, which I’ve loved doing. I now consider myself to be incredibly lucky with a wonderful husband, two fabulous children and their partners, our three adorable granddaughters and currently, our two fox terriers. A love of travel to far away places has been realised and our French house remains the dream we wished for and finally achieved.
Hi to all of you who have found your way here. Let me take you on a visual journey through the pages of my books. Words can be used to inspire the imagination and create an image, but a photograph can confirm whether what you see in your mind’s eye is the reality or not.
The images included within these pages relate to each Chapter in order, just as they appear in the books, but some Chapters lack a visual element and others, especially those detailing events which occurred a while ago, have no relatable ones at all, even after in-depth searches through my huge repository of printed or computerised photographic memories.
Each photo is labelled and often contains a short piece of text which tells more of the story which didn’t appear in the original book.
Some images from those early days may be a little fuzzy as they were captured using a little manual ‘snappy’ camera, long before we needed to worry about pixels, jpegs, pngs, gifs and tiffs, or before I actually purchased my first Canon EOS Digital SLR!
I will be blogging about our adventures and places we’ve visited which don’t feature in the books, as well as lots of other French related things, with perhaps a little expansion into other areas of the world. Let’s just wait and see where it takes me.
I will also happily welcome any questions, comments, opinions or gossip you may wish to make and have provided my author email address on the contact page. Be warned, there are rules.
